The Introduction to Massage Practice offers a taste of the Sydney Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SITCM)’s accredited massage programs. Combining theoretical and practical learning, it includes introductory sessions on Swedish massage and deep tissue massage, as well as a Qi Gong exercise that draws on SITCM’s unique expertise in Chinese medicine education.
This six-hour course gives participants a basic introduction to massage therapy fundamentals. It includes a short series of theoretical and practical learning sessions. Upon completing this course, participants are issued a Certificate of Completion.
Graduates who wish to begin a career in massage can apply to enrol in SITCM’s accredited Diploma of Remedial Massage, which lasts one year and next commences on 10 February 2025. Those who choose this option will have their $150 course fee refunded and receive advanced standing towards their Diploma.
The Non-AQF Qualification Policy provides the terms and conditions associated with this course.
This short course is insufficient to launch a career in massage. However, those who go on to study one of SITCM’s accredited massage courses can then start their own massage practice or work alongside other health professionals such as physiotherapists, chiropractors, and Chinese medicine practitioners in multidisciplinary clinics. SITCM’s Job Opportunities Network further supports graduates in exploring career paths.
This short course is not accredited. However, it offers a pathway towards several other SITCM massage courses that are accredited by the Australian Skill Quality Authority (ASQA) and endorsed by industry associations.
Learners are provided access to a series of short self-paced online lessons to prepare them for their practical session.
The six-hour practical session is delivered in the main classroom on the SITCM Campus (Level 5 of the Harbour Plaza Building). In this setting, foundational massage skills are developed through hands-on practice, scenario-based simulations, and trainer-led discussions.
The next practical session will be delivered on Saturday 1 February, from 10am to 5pm (with a one-hour lunch break).
Assessment tasks include including review questions, and a final theoretical test.
